Chocholate

★Trader Joe's Dark Crisp Chocolate.

★LEONIDAS

Japanese Drama
Year 1997 (TBS)
Taisyu Kase

Watch Situation: TBS on-demand TV

Tokyo Tower movie

I like Okada-kun, so it was worth to watch for one time, but I’m sure I don’t want to see this again. If you don’t know anybody in this movie, don’t watch. The biggest uncomfortable part is the title. Why is this titled “Tokyo Tower”? There’s no strict inspiration from Tokyo Tower.

BUNRAKU – The Japanese traditional performance 2 –

Only thing I knew about Bunraku was that it’s a puppet theater. For me, the word ‘puppet theater’ directly links to the scene of the movie The Sound of the Music. It was a puppet that manipulated with the strings from the above, so audience won’t see the manipulators. But in the case of Bunraku, three manipulators stand by the side of the puppet. One main manipulator controls the head and right hand, the other moves the only left hand, the other do the legs. That’s total of three people to movie one puppet. This means if there are five puppets are on the stage, naturally total of 15 manipulators are on the stage. Even if they have the face cover to hide the existence, it is really funny picture. Only main manipulator can show the face, they can play without the masks. The most amazing part was they don’t move or change their aspects at all to make the expression out of the scene except the puppets.

Of course, puppets can’t speak so there are groups to make the sounds and lines. Syamisen, Japanese traditional type of the instrument look like a guitar is used to express the atmosphere and singer called “Tayu” do the part of the lines ant tells the story.

Last night show had an about 30 minutes of the class for Bunraku beginners. It was really great. The real actors came out on the stage and show as how to move the puppets, how the puppets are made, the importance of the sound and music in Bunraku, and so on. It was really helpful class for people like me who thought it was like the Sound of Music type of the theater.

As the other Japanese traditional performances like Noh, Kabuki, Rakugo, it has a strong roots in families. So you will find that many same family names in the actor’s name. It’s like a school in Japanese traditional art scene and still active. In this strictly ruled network, I has a preconceived idea that maybe all the actors were pretty old. But I must say it was wrong. There were some young faces, maybe around early 20s or so, and they were pretty cute. Plus the fact that they are contributing to this art scene gave me an positive impression. I just want more people to go to see the Bunraku and get the touch of the traditional art, especially for Japanese young people who don’t know much about it like me.

*The comment on Bunraku from the Japanese rapper BOSE is pretty funny.

*The governor of the Osaka where the Bunraku originally started said that manipulator of the puppets should be two people to cut the employment costs. I can’t believe this!

Home Alone (1990)

Year: 1990
Director: Chris Columbus
Writer/Producer: John Hughes
Actor: Macaulay Carson Culkin

Watching Situation: At mom's home with mom. It was on TV program.
Rating: ★★ (especially during Christmas season)

I have nothing to review about this movie. Just wanted to mark this that I watched this year again because I can't remember how many times I've watched this movie. This movie always takes me to the world of Christmas in Stages. The big house, beautiful illumination around the neighbors, great Christmas songs, macaroni and cheese dinner, and the importance of the family (I don't like the mother even after Kevin forgave her. I think she is terrible).

There is one thing caught me this time. It was Kevin's jacket that has hood with the zipper in the middle. When it is unzipped, the hood looks like a sailor suite. I remember that I used have those kind of cloth when I was a kid, but I don't see them anymore. They are really cute. I think I want one for new jacket this year. It's good for me that they are out of fashion. I love out of fashion.

Kanetanaka -

The best established Japanese restaurant "Ryoutei (料亭)".

I didn't know about this restaurant until I had the Obento Box at the Noh Gakudo of ceruleantower. According to my Japanese traditional art teacher, KANETANAKA is the best of the best of Japanese restaurant. Not only the price, but the service and security is highly promised. So we can't make a reservation with out introduction of someone who has the connection to the restaurant.

In the ぐるなび site, it says that the lowest price starts from \30,000.  Wow, I don't think I could ever visit there. But there is a way you can eat their meal for reasonable price. At the Noh Gakudo!  They prepare Bento Box at the side of the reception for the audience. Actually, it's not a Bento Box, but each dish is portion size and you can pick up some you want and make your own dinner plate. Last night I had a, Kamameshi, Karaage, Milk pudding. They were wonderful, and total was \2000. Yeah, that was the money I can afford.

I was glad to know the existence of KANETANAKA, because I'm sure that none of my friend would know about here.  This restaurant is so limited.  Maybe there are more to find in Japanese traditional art world, it is exciting!

KABUKI – Japanese traditional performance –

Yesterday I went to see Kabuki performance. It was my first experience and it was way better than I expected. Usually it costs around 15000 yen for a ticket but it was the special performance day for kids for free. My friend who has many connections to Kabuki society invited me to this wonderful event.

The title was “RENJISHI” (連獅子).  The story is about father and his son. There was a hill on the mountain, and it was known for the place to test the child. If child could climb up the hill, he has real brave heart. This custom was originated from the old legend of Singh in this story. So father pushed him down to the bottom of the hill. After son is gone, father couldn’t stay calm worrying about his son. Despite all his concern, son climbed up the hill alive. They hugged and danced hard to share the happiness for a long time.  Here, strange thing happen. They are possessed by the spirit of the Singh while they were dancing.
Then, next scene comes with two old men who believe different religious. This scene is a contradiction of first scene which had almost no lines and funny situation, two men battles over their religious in a funny way and it makes us laugh. They became company to pass the hill together because of the legend that tells Singh will appear and get you. On the way to the hill, suddenly they hear the weepy sound of the wind.
Then, last scene comes with father and the son who became the spirit of the Singh. The costume and their hair is completely different and it looks real Singh. Long long hair that reaches their feet. They sake their head to show the madness with that long hair, it is the high spot of this performance.

It seems that second part is not that important to this performance, but it is. The second part makes time for actors of father and son to re-make up and change their costume. Also gives the audience to refresh the dark moment of first scene.  The performance starts suddenly without any explanation of the background story, so I recommend to get some info before you watch. You don’t have to know all the detail but just the situation, for instance who is the character and the rough story line. I wouldn’t find out that two main characters were father and son if I didn’t read the commentary. I would thought they were couple, because son had a red hair and father had white hair. One important point to see Kabuki, female can’t be on the stage on Kabuki theatre. So it is common to act female by male actor.

The performing time was about an hour. I thought it will be longer but according to my friend, the running time is different on each title.  “RENJISHI” is great title for whom goes to Kabuki first time. The new theatre for KabukiGINZA KABUKIZA is open next April!!

11/22/63

11/22/63 by Stephen King

Stephen King

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)

Year 1997
Director: Clint Eastwood
Writer: John Berendt (book), John Lee Hancock (screenplay)
Stars: John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, Jude Law, Alison Eastwood, Lady Chablis

My rating: 3.0 ★★★
Watch Situation: Rented from TSUTAYA

If I had read the original book, the rating would be little different because there are some comments that this movie reflects the original atmosphere really well. But as a dvd I just picked up randomly, this movie was a big one. I didn’t know the director was Eastwood until I see that on the end title roll.
Here is something I want to share besides my review, this site. When I was looking some information about this movie I run into this site and I thought this is great review site. Not just the review of this movie, but I was so glad to see the Totoro in the category of Animation. As Japanese who loves Giburi, I was so happy to see the comments. Well, I’ve never watched Giburi film outside of Japan in other languages, so I should try it some time.

Blood Diamond (2006)

Year 2006
Director: Edward Zwick
Screen Writer: Charles Leavitt
Stars:  Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly

My rating: 4.0 ★★★★  (Regardless of the rating, everybody should watch this at least once)
Watch Situation: Rented from TSUTAYA

As I wrote on above, everybody should watch this movie at least once. Then people should have a time to think about buying diamonds. Well, I’m sure there is more issues like this besides diamond, but this will be a good start. At least it changed some of my thoughts towards the diamonds. I’ll never buy diamonds. If I got some by happening I will use them as a charity.

I have friends who are living in Johannesburg in South Africa for about one year as a resident. They came back to Japan last week, and I had a chance to meet them after a whole year. I was longed to hear the story about the town and their life. They, the couple seemed very happy together, but when it comes to the story about the town, they told us it is a lot different from here and I wouldn’t be able to imagine without coming there. And wife, my good friend, gave me a example to make it easier for me. It was this movie. She told me the town is like the one in this movie. Surely, she just mentioned the one town that is on the movie for a short time, but for me, the story itself struck me like a storm. It was an African storm. I didn’t know nothing about Africa, and it was much worth than I thought.

After we said goodbye, my boyfriend who joined to meet them together told me to go to Africa as our honeymoon. Yes, it would be a good idea. I don’t except any romantic gorgeous hotel or dinner there, I just have a opportunity to see what there is like. It will be great idea of using our time useful.

If you think diamonds is the best accessory for the women, I think it is wrong. Please just see this movie.

Here is some latest news.

Pay It Forward (2000)

Year 2000
Director: Mimi Leder
Original Author: Catherine Ryan Hyde
Screen Writer: Leslie Dixon
Stars:  Kevin Spacey, Haley Joel Osment and Helen Hunt

My rating: 4.5 ★★★★☆
Watch Situation: On cable TV

I think this was my fourth time to watch this movie. The more I watch this movie, the more I like. I feel this every time, even if I watched without intention. (I just found out ‘intention’ and ‘intension’ are completely different word…)

When the time my kid goes to school comes, I hope he/she will have a teacher like Mr.Simonet (Kevin Spacey) who give an assignment of …

Think of an idea for change our world - and put it into action!

As one of person who is interested in education matters, I think this kind of questions that give children an opportunity to think is the greatest work. Couple days ago, I had a chance to talk to some of the students who are attending to the American school in Japan. They were senior now, but they told me some interesting project that they had done in their school life from elementary to nowadays.  The most interesting project was ‘Dummy baby project’. In their health class, each student was given electronic baby which has an microchips to manipulate the baby like cry, craves for food, changing diapers and so on. The students have to carry them around for about 24HRs, to every class they have, to the friend’s house after school, to their homes to spend the night. I’ve never heard this type of class in Japan, but I thought this experience will stay in their mind long time and they can share with their friends, and having this kind of knowledge in early time of the life, especially men, are very precious experience. Like this, giving children to think and act with their actual life is important. I know that this project will need many budgets to put into action, but it teaches us one of an idea.

Anyway, the boy in this story changed the world with his thinking and action. My heart is moved a lot by thinking this. I know that this story is a fiction, but according to author’s site, (the Story is here)she really had an experience of ‘Pay it forward’. Making these little things into some kind of action can create many possibilities. This story teaches us that.

I was so curious that who did the special make-up on Kevin spacey, because it looked so real. And I found out. Here is the make-up artist’s site. It is very interesting.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Year 1990
Director : Garry Marshall
Writer: J.F.
Executive Producer: Laura Ziskin
Stars:  Richard Gere, Julia Roberts

My rating: 5 ★★★★★
Watch Situation: The show was on cable TV program and I watched by happening.

I’ve seen this movie for many times. I know how the story goes, what they do, and for some parts, what they would say. I definitely remember that I bought the soundtrack of this movie I was at the six grades along with the CD of My Girls, other my favorite movie. Both CDs were my treasure for all the time so far. I still have them and I love all the songs.

After I watched this movie, I cried the hardest throughout this year. I just couldn’t help crying at many moments, like with just the scene of Vivian smiles with big voice. It just makes me happy. Also I love the scene where Vivian wakes up and shows her red hair for the first time to Edward. Of course, I can’t forget the scene of the shopping at the Rodeo Drive.

All the scenes just bring me some kind of happiness, and wet my eyes. The friendship between the hotel owner and Vivian is great part of the movie too. Her dream wouldn’t be come true at the end if there were no help of the hotel owner. (Actually the limo driver.)

Even after I find out the most of the scene where shows the parts of Vivian are fake, a body double, it just don’t matter to me what I think about this movie. Although, I was little shock to see the cover of the DVD or the poster which Vivian and Edward are standing next to each other and their height looks as same as the other. That is impossible, because Vivian is totally taller than Edward. Oh, well, never mind.

I just had to say how much I love this movie, even I after I watched many times. It is just a one of the wonderful movie!!

Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)

Year 1995
Director : Carl Franklin
Writer/Screen Play: Peter Stone
Stars:  Denzel Washington, Tom Sizemore and Jennifer Beals

My rating: ??
English Listening Level: 5 ★★★★★

Watch situation: Recorded from TV program called “Gogo no Load Show”(my favorite program).
I recorded this because the description on the TV board said it’s a mystery, suspense and Denzel Washington. And I forgot that I recorded this for a long time. Then two days ago, there were nothing on TV, so I just checked the recorded list, and found this. I was dragged by the appearance of Denzel Washington at the beginning because he was young and smelled something old days. But in 10 minutes, I found myself not following the story. English spoken in this movie is so hard to understand for me. Definitely, the reason is the accent of the South. Of course the vocabularies used in the line were sophisticated and some are technical terms, but on top of that, the accent was just not something I was used to. So I can’t rate this movie by my understanding. I could judge only by the level of English. Apparently, this could be rank A, so I put five stars for that.  I have to practice more listening skills for variety of accents. Well, I’m glad that I found this lack of skills.
